Kadampuzha, in the Malappuram countryside between Valanchery and Kottakkal, is one of the busiest Devi temples in north Kerala – and one of the most unusual. There is no idol here. The Goddess, Parvathy in the form of a huntress (Kiratha Parvathy), is worshipped in a small opening in the ground inside the sreekovil, and the poojas are offered there.
Devotees come from far and wide with one prayer above all: to have their obstacles removed. They do this through Muttarukkal, the breaking of a coconut before the Goddess, and through Poomoodal, covering the sacred spot with red thechi flowers. Because there are no steps in front of the sreekovil, people can stand close and watch their offerings being made.
The story of Kadampuzha begins in the Mahabharata. Arjuna, during the Pandavas' exile, did penance to win the Pashupata weapon from Shiva. To test him, Shiva and Parvathy came down as a hunter couple (kiratha). When the demon Mookasura, disguised as a wild boar, charged at Arjuna, both Arjuna and the hunter shot it at once, and a fierce quarrel followed over whose arrow had killed it – until Arjuna recognised the Lord. Local tradition adds that Parvathy grew thirsty during these events, and Shiva shot an arrow into the earth to bring up water; devotees connect the name of the place with this story.
The temple itself is linked to Adi Sankaracharya. The story goes that while he was passing this way on a pilgrimage, he saw a divine radiance in the thick undergrowth. As he meditated, the light shrank and vanished into a hole in the ground, and he understood it to be the presence of Parvathy. Sankaracharya performed the first poojas here on the Karthika star of Vrischikam, and that day is still celebrated every year as Thrikkarthika, the temple's foundation day. Because the Goddess had chosen to enter the earth, no idol was installed; worship is offered to the opening itself.
Devotees see the Goddess in three forms through the day: as Vidya Durga (Saraswathi) in the morning, as Vana Durga in her quick-to-bless 'twaritha' form at noon, and as Adi Durga (Mooladurga, Lakshmi) in the evening. Ganapathi is believed to be present with her. The temple is run by the Kadampuzha Devaswom under the Malabar Devaswom Board, which also looks after the nearby Madambiyarkavu Shiva temple.

Traditional, modest clothing is best: a mundu or dhoti for men, and a saree, set-mundu, long skirt or churidar for women. As in many Kerala temples, men may be asked to remove shirts inside. Follow the temple's current notices.
Entry customs follow the temple's tradition; please follow the temple's current notices. Offerings such as Muttarukkal and Poomoodal are booked at the vazhipadu counters, which open for shorter hours than the temple itself (roughly 05:00–11:00 and 15:30–17:00). The Devaswom serves a free meal (annadanam) to devotees.
Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays, holidays, and the Thrikkarthika festival in Vrischikam (November–December) are the busiest; Thrikkarthika alone draws well over a lakh of people. On ordinary weekday mornings the queues are shorter. Arrive early if you plan to book an offering.
